Just an FYI to people who listen to my show. I often post news from a site called mopo.ca, but today when i visited the site looking for the funny content I was accosted by a warning screen telling me i have a virus and the website is dangerous… OK, didn’t even look close to being real. i hit the escape button.
Then a fake virus scan ran and this lovely error message popped up in the window. The malware was trying to get me to install their “special” Antivirus, but the OS seemed a bit off. I’m working on a Mac right now… the Windows XP menu looks a bit out of place.
Sad thing is its very easy to have a website do a browser check to not only see what type of browser you are viewing the website with, Internet Explorer, opera Firefox ect, but also what OS th browser is running on. So if the scammers ever really got their act together they could theoritcally do a good job, but apparently they are slopy, so hold off visting that site until further notice and as always don’t install anything a website trys to force you to. To exit out of a program trying to hijack your machine on a PC, hti CTL- Alt -Delted and close the offending program, on a Mac hold down Option, Apple and Esc to force quit.

Today’s Show: Gmail, Video Games, Inbox Zero, Podcasting, Antivirus, Pharaoh, Lego, Social Networking, Hot Dogs, Coffee, Pricing, Milk
Today’s episode is going to be an interesting ride, and its the first show in a while where i can’t come up with a good title right off the bat. Since we have returned to writing articles there is plenty of fodder for commentary in the shows, we’re going to try and keep up a decent pace, probably not 2 or 3 posts a day but there is a decent backlog of information that does need to get out, I’ll try to space it out so the content is as fresh as always.
The content for today’s show is serious at times, light hearted at others and takes a good chuck of time and devotes it to the Consumable portion of the episode. So many great stories its hard to find a place to put them all. Please be sure to check the tumblr feed, the stories which rock but don’t quite make it are always shuffled off the there right before the show deploys.
As always Enjoy the show and Stay Caffeinated!

This is the first in a series of articles focusing on trying to get by with a little less.
In a time flush with horror stories of job loss and debt it would be ridiculous to think that if something breaks or is a bit old we would just mindlessly push off to buy another one. Computers are expensive, software products shouldn’t be disposable, neither should technology. Its with all of this in mind that we start a new series of articles here at the podcast aiming on getting by with less funding. Please feel free to submit your questions or comments either on this article or by clicking the email button on the page and asking a question.
If you are running a PC you NEED antivirus, but the yearly licensing for most AV programs is enough to make me stutter, fifty dollars a year? I understand that there are costs involved in owning any computer and that no machine should ever be without an AV solution. So what to Do? Enter two quick and simple software packages that do the job. Read the rest of this entry »
