I Love getting an image stuck in my head, and quite honestly this one had been bouncing around in my attic for a while. Especially when people ask how I like my coffee.

Black as my soul? or If you happen to be able to brave the horror, i would truly enjoy some R’lyeh Roast, Black as the Abyss and Thicker than Ichor if you don’t mind. and hey… even if you do. Throw some extra tentacle in there if need be.

When I go someplace new I always try all the coffee I can. I want to sample the different atmosphere, the different blends. But most of all I want to find a good espresso.

The family and I spent the day walking around Provincetown, Mass. We took a wonderful Whale watching cruise (1 finback whale 5 humpbacks!) And I sampled as much espresso as I could. I had some good, some horrible. But one place stood out from the rest, Wired Puppy.

Between the friendly staff welcoming atmosphere and unbelieveable coffee, this place is fantastic. The espresso was perfect, I term I rarely us with espresso. Fragrant, and sweet, not over extracted with a wonderfully thick creama on top. Quite simply a top five espresso for me. I don’t gush when it comes to espresso often.

Espresso is a fickle mistress, treat her right and she is sweet beyond compare, treat her wrong and the damage is too bad to watch. At Wired Puppy they do it up perfectly.

First things first, Thank you for 5.5 years of podcasting, the comments and feedback, the few detractors and the tons of downloads. I have some fun stats to share on the show, The CaffiNation has been growing steadily and is only going to get better from here. And I have each one of you to thank, each person who downloaded the show even once, who participated in the contests, the fun, the hijinks, an the caffeine.

Tonight was the first show in years I have been nervous about doing. And that is a good thing. We might change a couple of things going forward, and keep a couple of other things. Video is here to stay, maybe not always in live episodes, but we will be back in video you can be assured. 500 episodes… and a gentle goodbye to long running server. Orion is decommed!

Stare deeply into the inky black depths of your coffee cup. What do you see? Do you see aa tool to get you through your day? Do you see a wonderful cup of the combined efforts from hundreds of farmers roasters and craftsmen along the way. By looking into this cup of joy can you tell how much it cost?

If you are like me you see both but you need the former, and enjoy the latter that much more because of it. I need coffee to function, and thanks in large part to my kids this is no longer a joke. Late nights, fitful sleep. Its all there as part and parcel of being a caffeine dreamin dad.

Coffee as a tool gets me up in the morning, powers me through meetings and peels my eyes back to enjoy the wonders of late night TV.

But on the flip side, coffee as a hobby makes me, and pushes me to drink the best. I want to know what a good sumatran coffee feels like, smells and tastes like. I want my pallette to be refined enough to pick out the nuances of a medium roasted yiggacheffe, and all its tasty goodness.

I feel that I have positioned myself in such a fashion that I can enjoy the hobby coffee when funds and circumstances allow, but work with the tool coffee to sip as I work.

Still bad coffee is bad coffee, and I find myself deep in the midst of a paradox. I don’t want to be someone who turns his nose up at an offered coffee just because it came out of a can, and wasn’t hand picked by virgins in papua new guinea… because hell this is a Thursday you know. Thursdays are always espresso.

Coffee is about experience. My family and your family drink coffee, be it, black, sweetened, overly creamed and from an ancient pot. They drink it at parties, over dinner or just because. If you come to my house you will get good coffee, but if I go to your house all I need is good company.

In short I don’t want to be a coffee snob, but I still want to enjoy the snobby goodness of a well prepared ristretto when the situation calls for it. What say you good coffee people of the internet? Do you turn your nose up at an offered cup, or do you drink the scene in? I find myself constantly struggling with this.

This week has school starting, for some. And for the rest of us involved in the Education field we are scrambled. Like so many eggs… Picture your brain, and your brain on stress thats what we have right here a good old brain omelette. We had a bit of fun with a little shake rattle and roll, I’m going to go ahead an call it a geographical shout-out to our left coast listeners. Friends, please bear with us on this episode. It may not end well.

We’re all here because we’re not all there tonight!

This week we have a full crew and half a deck of cards. So… after much trial and error it turns out the problem with the computer was not entirely the sound card but rather some sound card, some windows 7 junk and some cable problems. I’ve heard you have cable problems and I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but a hiss ain’t one. Turns out I was making things to complicated for my own good, Quite a common mistake I make. Overlooking the simple in favor of elaborate fixes. But We’re back with a  brand new look and lease on life.

We hit the video game and tech news Hard this week. When it comes right down to it. People love themselves some coffee but in all honesty the Summertime is a bad time for coffee news. Its hot out, and one can only discuss the Iced Coffee Paradox only so many times. We have news from all over and an attitude straight outta Philly. Check out this weeks Hijinks.

Because of a wonderful recording error yesterday I have 3 rants all lined up for you at the front of the show. So you get 3 times as much bluster for the low low price of one download. I’ll be here all week try the veal

We have a preponderance of Zombie related information to pass along, a sign of the times or are zombies just that cool? We I have a wonderful little look into the world of conspiracy theories, because without black helicopters and mind controlling public water supplies how else would we live in this mixed up world.

This week just feels off. I’m on vacation and I’m not nearly as connected to the internet Pulse as I usually am. Things are happening and I just don’t know about them. But you know what its very good to unplug once in a while. Stretch my legs out and wander around the real world for a while. Today’s show is a breath of fresh fun air into the CaffiNation Lair.

Notihng is more satisfying than drinking a nice cup of coffee in the morning. But when things are going out of wack, you now have the advantage of ctrl-alt-del coffee mugs. So take a deep breath, have a sip of your coffee, and just end some of those tasks.

This is not a normal review. I have used this machine for 3 years, and it is still going strong. The problems that were there in the beginning are still there, but they were never enough to force my hand at upgrading.

This review has been a long time coming. I often have people ask me what is the best espresso machine to start out with? Well I myself don’t have a huge budget, so technically I’m still with my starter Espresso Machine. And it is a beast. By Beast I mean this little machine has a few quibbles and just works, and works well. Especially when you consider the price point it comes in at.

Will I still upgrade down the road when funding isn’t as much of a object as it is right now? Why yes… yes I will. Will this machine earn a place of honor in my office as the espresso machine in my remote coffee campus? Why yes… yes it will.

The DeLonghi EC155 has a couple of great things going for it, and two main detractors. First we go with the good. Read the rest of this entry »

Take one part greek humor, and two part industrial design innovation and you get the unlikely marriage between a soup ladle and a coffee mug. brain child of DEDE DextrousDesign, this is a bit of whimsy i could get being.  I’m not one to quibble about the shape of your mug as a functional device. As long as it holds coffee I’m all for it. And this one seems to be specifically designer for Soup Slurpers. The site hosting the project CKIE (Seeky) is a crowd-sourced design project source. So if you like the slurp mug and you think the financials are sound head on over and give them a commitment.
