16th Century Monks living in Germany had a couple crazy ideas. one of which being their idea of a good fast for Lent was abstaining from solid food and drinking nothing but beer for 46 days…
I’ll let that sink in. Nothing but beer and water for 46 days. Enter a more modern man J Wilson, who decided to give the test a go. So he did his research as not just any old Coors, Bud Light or Guinness would do. The monks brewed a special beer just for this occasion a Dark and Unfiltered Dopplebock. Reason being the beer was loaded with vitamins and hearty enough to help sustain him.
How did he do? Well he made the full 46 days, lost 25 pounds, which considering he started out underweight probably was not a good thing. But the story is an interesting one. While at first you read Beer Diet you think… Hey i could do that. And then you go on to read how pretty much all health professionals involved tried to convince Wilson to do otherwise, and the wasn’t loosing fat here people, he didn’t have that much to begin with. No he was loosing muscle mass his body was consuming itself to survive… Kind of scary. So I’ll stick with my occasional good brew. England the home of Top Gear and automotive enthusiasts. London, the home of cramped streets and high society. These two are both apparently in dire need of tasty chilled treats. Enter the HMS Flake 99…. Licensed to Chill, with its captain and vendor in chief Dave Mounfield. A stand up comic with a pension of treats. The truck is actually a floating tasty protest / billboard for the plight of the ice cream truck industry. Down to a fraction of their size from 50 years ago due to restrictions on noise concerns over childhood obesity and other concerns these trucks are a dieing breed, but no one said anything about the rivers! Reminds me of the Silly Monkies Jumping on the bed.
You know as an aside 50 years ago we didn’t have tons of fat kids running around. I’m guessing its a problem with moderation and the modern ingredients and variants of the old ice cream recipes. But thats just me throwing ideas around. The van sponsored by Fredricks, the owners of the venerable Cadbury Brand, the HMS Flake 99 is currently patrolling the waters of the Thames in London with plans on crossing the channel and heading to Venice for next season! Now if ever there was a city in need of a floating confection store it is Venice!
Tonight’s show is a warming up edition. I’ve spent a good deal of the weekend so far outside in the cold weather. its definitely starting to feel like the season for once. Tonight’s tech and caffeine will hopefully bring a little warmth to your earlobes and warm your mind with delight. I talk a bit about the upcoming gift giving season throughout the show. I have been doing quite a bit of work on the website and Haven’t gotten it the way i would like it just yet, I’m always looking for comments and suggestions about features you would like to see on the site and any wonky design problems you see on the page. We might be winding down our hosting agreement with the current provider and migrating over the holiday break, quicker servers and better admin interface, but that’s getting ahead of myself now isn’t it.
