Peta attacks Tanooki MarioPosted by Steve Robbins in backchannel, Design, GameRoom, News
23 years after the first appearance of the Tanooki Suit, PETA thinks it is wrong of Mario to wear fur. PETA stated, “Tanooki may be just a “suit” in Mario games, but by wearing the skin of an animal, Mario is sending the message that it’s OK to wear fur.” Even though Mario achieves the ability of the suit by grabbing a leaf, PETA feels that wearing it encourages animal abuse. Tracy Reiman, PETA Executive Vice President, ”Tanukis are real-life raccoon dogs who are beaten and, as PETA’s undercover exposés show, often skinned alive for their fur. “This winter, everyone can give raccoon dogs and other fabulous animals a 1-UP by keeping our wardrobes fur-free.”To show much they really don’t appreciate the Tanooki suit, they have created a game called Super Tanooki Skin 2D, where you are a tanuki chasing after Mario to get your skin back. I have tried the game, and find that it is quite distasteful. So wearing the the Tanooki Suit is bad, but what about the frog suit? What do you do with a gameboy that hasn’t been used in quite some time. You make a zombie, that’s what you do. And that is exactly what artist Donald Kennedy, an artist over at KodyKoala, did with his old gameboy. Other than the gameboy, he also used hands from a Iron Man Monger figure and feet from an Iron Man Mark I figure. Even though none of us here at Caffination are female, or wear any type of woman’s clothing, I thought these were a must see.
If you don’t know, I am quite the Legend of Zelda fan. So when I saw this video, one question came to mind. What the heck is a marimba. After a few google searches I found the answer. As for how it sounds, I think it is beautiful. Especially when it plays any Zelda music. The Legend of Zelda Theme on Marimba
I loved the simplicity of cart based gaming consoles. No scratched CD’s to worry about. Did it really matter if your kid wandered off with the game? Did parents even play games back then? A modder from over at Instructables has taken his love of nostalgia one step further and dropped a Chinese Knock Off NES on a Chip (NOAC) into a Vintage Mario Brothers Cart. A couple of connectors and some mighty fine soldering later you have a NES in an NES Cart. Now that is recursion done right!

Every once in a while I get a bit down in the dumps about the site, or about the feedback. It didn’t last long this time. I had a friend start asking me about his website and how to get it up and running a half hour later when i realized I’d been talking that long I sort of figured out I know a heck fo a lot more than i give myself credit for. And most of it has been because the fine readers and listeners at The CaffiNation have allowed me to play around with minor details of the show and the site without too many fires and riots. It’s been a great ride. Back on point and a bit disjointed. There are plenty of off the wall crazy stories to tell for this week, so the challenge is going to be keeping the spice flowing. Gotta hit each target and move on. Content from everybody mixing to create one lovely brew delivered direct to you. Geek Cruft
