We hit everything from Google TV to vertical chess. Talk about some epic thanksgiving feasts to be had and discuss the wonders of lollipops and true fair trade coffee.

Ask around my office, or around Podcamp, or a technology centric podcast or recording area. People can’t help but compliment Audacity, the free software program does everything you need to do to produce professional recording and media. The best thing about free software is the price, the worse thing is that there usually aren’t good directions for what to do with it. Enter The Book of Audacity by No Starch Press. No Starch press offers a line of books that take a relaxed approach to presenting good information. they have a tendency to publish technical books that are, gasp! Easy to read. Imagine that.

Carla Schroder, the author spends time to segment the information into each platform discussing candidly with little fandom attached to good things about each platform, be it Windows Mac or Linux. The graphics charts, and helpful hints are expertly placed to break up the flow of text and make the book easy to consume. Carla’s voice can clearly be heard throughout the text, so that it sounds less like a white paper and more like a discussion from an expert point of view.

How does it Read?

Dry subject matter is dry, but a complex concept explained in good detail with frequent examples and bite sized chunks of relevant information is always the best way to go. When you pick up a tech book, do you want to go from soup to nuts? Or do you do what the rest of us humans do, flip right to the section you NEED at that point. This book is designed to make both approaches easy t understand. A short introduction and focused chapters make the information compartmentalized and accessible for users of any platform.

I’ve been using audacity both in work and at home for over 5 years at this point and I picked up tips and tricks which I hope will make my future recordings, mixes and podcasts that much cleaner. I am constantly called upon to teach sessions on using Audacity.  love helping others realize the value of a free program, you just have to provide the sweat equity to make it yours. With this book the time spent sweating is reduced and the time spent making good audio is increased!

The only area I saw that wasn’t really dealt with is What Happens when Audacity Crashes? But I have you covered there.

Rent or Own:

I judge all books based on whether or not you should buy them or take them out of the library. I would file this book in the Own category, not only is it a good reference for experiences users to eyeball when they are stuck on removing the last little bit of fuzz from a track or getting the most out of their setup. But this book is an essential tool for the new Audacity user.

A fun episode with lots of good and shiny articles, We cover topics from how to wash your bling to horrible and beautiful design. Dogs and Cats living together… The wonder of a good cup of tea and how technology and process affect the coffee you drink. Plus we make a couple of horrible puns as per usual along the way, how can you not be excited about that?

Massive Hundred Year Blizzard! But not really that bad

You wouldn’t think two feet of snow would affect a show taped, recorded and researched entirely in my basement would you? Well if you spend a good deal of the morning shoveling and the rest of the day drinking coco you might end up a might bit tired. Sitting down to research the show I soon fell fast asleep. A couple of hours later the wife woke me up, so I made lunches and went to bed.

This episode has all that content but without the yawning and bleary eyes that would otherwise have followed. I’m toying with the idea of going on Hyadis after show 394 until after the new year, so you’ll need to wait until then to find out. I’d like to take the break to start ramping up for the 4oo in 4 event. The CaffiNation Podcast will turn 4 years old on January 9th, and celebrate our 400th show shortly thereafter

Today’s Show:  Gmail, Video Games, Inbox Zero, Podcasting, Antivirus, Pharaoh, Lego, Social Networking, Hot Dogs, Coffee, Pricing, Milk

Today’s episode is going to be an interesting ride, and its the first show in a while where i can’t come up with a good title right off the bat. Since we have returned to writing articles there is plenty of fodder for commentary in the shows, we’re going to try and keep up a decent pace, probably not 2 or 3 posts a day but there is a decent backlog of information that does need to get out, I’ll try to space it out so the content is as fresh as always.

The content for today’s show is serious at times, light hearted at others and takes a good chuck of time and devotes it to the Consumable portion of the episode. So many great stories its hard to find a place to put them all. Please be sure to check the tumblr feed, the stories which rock but don’t quite make it are always shuffled off the there right before the show deploys.

As always Enjoy the show and Stay Caffeinated!

Every once in a while its a real good thing to look back at what you are doing and how you do it to take in some of the lessons you might have missed.Basics never go out of style. And you might get something new out of the re-learning. So in that spirit I decided to ask…

What have I learned from Podcasting?

Workflow is king:

Even the most unorganized person in the world needs to have a battle plan when it comes to producing content and doing it consistently and well. You need to establish what the steps are to getting you show from idea to ear, break each step out into smaller parts. Then after you have your list look for ways to make the whole process more efficient. It used to take me 3-4 hours to do a 15 minute show from start to finish. Now it takes me 3 hours to do a 35 minute show. More time is spent on research, less on editing and more on finishing touches. Read the rest of this entry »

Today’s Show: Podcamp, Podcasting, coffee, community and passion This episode is a bit f a departure from the normal episodic content of the CaffiNation Podcast. Its basically the dulcet sounds of my voice bridging between to live segments. I’m getting the hang of recording live more and more and I’d love to incorporate this type of thing in the future. Its all about you the listeners in the end. If you dig it I will keep it up, if you hate it I may just move on. Comments feedbac and suggestions are always welcome!
