But really who doesn’t?
You owe it to the men, women and people in general in your life to focus on good coffee. With all the terms and marketing speak thrown about in the coffee world I’m going to help you by cutting through the junk to get to the information. We already learned about simple tricks to make a good cup of coffee, now we need to pick the best coffee for the job. I have a vested interest in this topic, being a father of one with a second kiddlette on the way in mid july, I’m trying to look out for myself here too. Consider this bite sized coffee information.
Quick tips for buying good coffee:
Dark roast, light roast, medium roast, French, Vienna, the terms that are thrown about in coffee sales boarder on criminally confusing. Roasts, Origins, acidity, caff or not to caff… I’m going to hopefully try to demystify this for you.
- Roast: is how long the bean has been cooked. On a scale from light to dark a common roast scale
- Light, Cinnamon, Medium Light, American, City, Vienna, Dark, French, Italian
- One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone says that the coffee is French roast flavor…
- Second Pet peeve, Espresso as a Roast, an espresso is a blend,
- Origin: Where the bean comes from, African Coffee is usually Bold and fruity, South American Coffee is usually Mild and Spicy and Island coffee is usually much more bold and can be either earthy or fruity
- Darker the roast the less likely you are to see the flavor of the origin, So Don’t pay premium for burnt coffee.
- There are two types of coffee, Arabica, and Robusta. Most big chains blend both.
- Arabica is smoother and more subtle flavor wise
- Robusta is bolder, has more caffeine, and much less flavor variation
- Pay for the good stuff, its worth it, to an extent. don’t sweat not being able to afford the super expensive, but shelling out 9 – 12 bucks for a bag
- Home Roasting: Trust me if you love coffee, I mean LOVE it then you owe it to yourself to research and try it.

But really who doesn’t?
You owe it to the men, women and people in general in your life to focus on good coffee. Life has many ups and downs, there are things you can do to level the playing field. One of them is by learning how to make a good cup of coffee. I have a vested interest in this topic, being a father of one with a second kiddlette on the way in mid july, I’m trying to look out for myself here too. Consider this bite sized coffee information.
Quick Tips for making good coffee:
No matter the type of brewing you are going to be doing, drip brew, pour over, espresso, single serving, cold brew, do it well with these simple tips.
- Use good water, clean and hopefully free from minerals, hard water makes for bad coffee.
- Grind then brew. buy a cheap grinder, When possible buy whole beans and grind as you use.
- If you have a single serving machine, buy the attachment that lets you grind your own, it is worth it.
- Always use fresh. If you coffee is older than the current lunar month its time for fresh. Either drink more or buy less.
- Avoid artificial flavors: Most flavored coffee is figured out in a lab by mixing chemicals together. If you go with flavored at least use natural. I’m personally a coffee flavored coffee kind of man myself

This episode is what happens when you are stuck writing, producing and otherwise cramming content for this long. I love what do and I can only hope the episodes have been worth the fun. I’m starting to hone my workflow even more and I might just do a Making of The CaffiNation shortly. Let me know what anyone thinks of that. Might be another live show in the works too. Testing the waters. Speaking of waters I have been inundated with questions about how to make better coffee, what type of machine to buy ect. On today’s show i have a couple different tips for these questions, and I’ll be adding my own thoughts in as we go through them. I might also try my hand at writing a bit of a how to guide in the future, but not sure about it yet. A Long show with a ton of content and a bit of gab in between.
Enjoy the Episode!

This isn’t going to be the norm for episodes from here on out but every once in a while it helps to share some of the tools that I use on a daily basis.

One of the biggest problems I see people grapple with when trying to print photographs and graphics out on their color inkjet printers is that the finished product doesn’t always come out the way you expect it to. I spend a good deal of my time in my day job helping people fix their wonky documents and get the best possible result when trying to showcase their work in printed form. So Why not spread the love even more and distill the information into a small article for you. I have a couple of short tips and some terminology to help you out. However with a topic as huge and as technical as this its better broken up into usable chunks. Read the rest of this entry »

Money is green, and frankly so is everything else lately. But money is also king, if it costs too much then green is bad, and just won’t work. If it being green causes people with lots of money to loose some of it or make less of it then green is still bad and will get crushed. However green, lately, is saving consumers lots of Money. And the court of public opinion has decreed that green is good. So like a casino giving out a gambling hotline number, Big business wants you to be green, through clenched teeth.
In case you hadn’t guessed Green is the new buzzword for everything from clothing to furniture of late. Green living, green cars, green tech. But what does it mean? Does it mean on one hand reducing conspicuous consumption of goods and tech leaving behind a wakes of debris in your path? Does it mean reducing the oft mentioned footprint that each one of us has? Or is it something about recycle buckets, carbon, and hippies? Quite frankly it could be all of them but don’t let buzzwords and stereotypes lead you to believe that this will all wash over, and that none of it really means anything.
